Most motorcycle riders know that the right motorcycle tire is very important, but how important is it and what does 180/55ZR17 73W really mean? Should you buy cheap or expensive tires and what air pressure should you use?

Here's a little guide to help you understand what the different tire designations mean and which tire you should buy for your motorcycle. 

Sidewall
This is the area of the tire that runs from the rim edge to the tread and gives the tire its lateral stability. This is also where you'll find all the manufacturer's information about the tyre, but what does a number like 180/55ZR17 73W actually mean?

1. Tire width: 180/55ZR17 73W
This number indicates the nominal width of the tire, measured in millimeters from sidewall to sidewall. In this case 180mm.
Please note that the actual physical width of the tire on the rim may differ from the nominal width depending on the rim on which the tyre is mounted.

2. Aspect Ratio: 180/55ZR17 73W
This figure indicates the height of the tire expressed as a percentage of the width of the tyre. In this case, the tire height is 55% of the width of 180mm, which corresponds to a height of 99mm.

3. Wheel diameter: 180/55ZR17 73W
On a sport bike tire, these letters are usually "ZR". The "Z" indicates the speed rating of the tire, which in this case means that it is rated for 240km/h+. The "R" indicates that the tyre is a radial tire. The "17" indicates that the tire fits a 17" rim.

4. Load Index & Speed Rating: 180/55ZR1773W
The "73W" indicates the weight and speed index of the tire and should always be considered together when buying a new tyre. In this case, "73" indicates that the tire is rated for a maximum weight of 365kg at maximum inflation pressure. The "W" represents the maximum speed of the tire when properly inflated and used under load, in this case 270 km/h.
Always buy a tire that can cope with the maximum speed of your motorcycle. A tire with a lower speed rating than recommended can be extremely dangerous to ride on as the tire wears incorrectly.

• Never compromise on quality and price when it comes to motorcycle tires. It's the tires that keep you and your bike on the road. Buy a high-quality tire that suits your purposes.

• Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for size, rating and air pressure. This can usually be found in the owner's manual or service manual. 

• Change tires in time. The minimum recommended tread depth for motorcycle tires is 1 mm, so if you're getting close to this, plan to change your tires for next season.

• Check tires continuously for dry cracks and other damage. A tire showing age in the form of dry cracks should be replaced immediately.

• A cold tire has very poor grip, always warm it up before going into the tightest corners.
